Colorado Springs - A cell phone is no longer just a device to place a call but also a way to check email, text message friends, and even surf online and that has the creators of MyMobileWatchDog.com concerned.
The website utilizes a new technology called RADAR that allows a parent to monitor the calls and text messages that are sent to your child's cell phone.
"We're enabling parents the ability to more closely monitor and participate in the communication that their children are engaged in a daily basis," MyMobileWatchDog.com C.E.O. Bob Lotter says.
For Lotter, the website and the technology was five years and $20 million in the making, but he says it could end up keeping your child safe.
The technology begins with your computer, where a parent can log on to the MyMobileWatchDog.com website to set up a list of approved contacts for your child. Once the list is completed, the website duplicates it to your child's cell phone. If a person on the approved list contacts your child, the phone will recognize the call or message.
But if a person who is not on the list or a stranger tries to contact your child, the RADAR technology immediately lets you know.
NEWSCHANNEL 13 put the technology to the test with three cell phones, one representing a stranger, another representing a daughter, and the third representing the father's cell phone. Once the stranger text messaged the daughter, the message was forwarded to the father's phone within seconds.
Lotter says the technology is meant to keep up with the constant advances in cell phones and the children who use them. "Children are generally ten years or more advanced over their parents technologically, and this technology gap, I like to call it, is the reason why children are being exploited so easily today."
Lotter also believes the technology could actually help find a missing child, as it constantly allows a parent to monitor their child's cell phone, whether it be from work or home.
